Three Castles, One Day
Back in August we took a trip to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. This is probably my favorite area that I have been to in Germany. It has mountains and endless beautiful scenery, cute little towns, and castles.
Of course we had to see all the castles in the area.
The first castle we saw was Hohenschwangau. King Ludwig II of Bavaria grew up in this home. It’s not nearly as impressive as the other castles, but still pretty cool to see. We didn’t go inside, but just admired it from the outside.
The second castle we went to see was Neuschwanstein. This is the famous castle that Walt Disney modeled Cinderella’s castle off of. The outside is absolutely stunning. I already have plans to come back in the fall and the winter for pictures of this castle covered in snow and pictures of the trees in the fall.
Unfortunately this castle was never finished on the inside. Only a few rooms are completed on the inside which is a pretty big bummer.
In order to get that famous view of Neuschwanstein you have to walk on this bridge. It is terrifying! This is actually the least crowded we saw the bridge all day. When we were trying to take pictures we could barely move. It was miserable!
After fighting the crowds at Neuschwanstein we headed over to Schloss Linderhof. King Ludwig’s favorite castle. On the way we drove into Austria and past this beautiful lake. Lake Plansee.
That water really was that turquoise color!
We also stopped to get a currywurst. This is one of my favorite things to eat! It’s basically just pork sausage topped with curry ketchup and curry powder.
The grounds of Linderhof are amazing!
This castle is small, but incredibly ornate. Inside it is amazing. Unfortunately no pictures are allowed inside but it was so cool!
The grotto. King Ludwig would sit in his boat and have people perform for him.
We even got to see swans!
